Day 24 De Smet, South Dakota (77miles) Half way point

Today the Riders will be rolling through South Dakota farm country and will pass through several small pleasant Midwest towns along the way to De Smet. Forty Three miles into the ride today, in the town of Huron, the riders will reach the half way point into their journey across the country (1650 miles). Today is also the half way point in days (24th day out of 48)on the road.

De Smet is a city in and the county seat of Kingsbury County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 1,164 at the 2000 census. It was named for Belgian Father Pierre De Smet, a 19th century Jesuit missionary.

A Father De Smet statue stands in the northwest corner of Washington Park.

De Smet was the childhood home of Laura Ingalls Wilder (of Little House on the Prairie fame), the supercentenarian Walter Breuning, and the birthplace of author Rose Wilder Lane.

The riders will pass by Laura Ingalls Wilder's houses on the way to their camp site tonight in De Smet's very pretty Washington Park.

This bridge and landscaped area was a memorial project in Washington Park, completed in 1985.

Weather forecast for De Smet:
Today will be partly sunny and breezy. A 20 percent chance of thunderstorms through mid afternoon. Highs in the mid 80s. South winds 15 to 25 mph becoming northwest 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon. Tonight it will mostly be clear. Lows in the upper 50s. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph.

Talked to Chuck earlier this evening. The riders had a great day with a tail wind most of the way into De Smet. In Huron at the half way point Bridgett had the song "Living on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi blaring on the boom box for the riders as they passed the 1650 mile mark....

We're half way there
Livin' on a prayer
Take my hand and we'll make it - I swear
Livin' on a prayer

Chuck said after about the 9th loop through the song he had to leave the reststop/checkpoint..... He was just chilling with the guys... Izzy, Andy, Mark, Tim and Mike at camp when I talked to him.

The above two pictures are of camp at Washington Park

He said that dinner was served by the Chamber of Commerce. They had pulled pork, potato salad, chips, salad, beans, and brownies. He said that the Chamber is feeding them breakfast in the morning. The sky is clear in De Smet and they expect tail winds for the next two days of riding.
